Appalachian Mountain Photography exhibit opens March 6

BOONE— Forty‐seven images have been selected for exhibit in the 6th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. The public will get its first look at this year’s finalists during the spring exhibition celebration at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts from 7-9 p.m. March 6. The Turchin Center is located on the Appalachian State University campus.

More than 900 images were submitted for the competition. The public is invited to vote for the competition’s People’s Choice Award sponsored by Footsloggers Outdoor and Travel Outfitter.

Voting will be available at a kiosk in the Turchin Center or online at Voting will continue through 5 p.m., March 27.

Judges for the competition are John Scarlata, coordinator of the technical photography program at Appalachian; Marie Freeman, photojournalist and photographer with University Communications at Appalachian; and award-winning photographer Richard Rapfogel. They will judge the final round of the competition after the exhibition opens to determine category winners and Best in Show. Winners will be announced April 1.

A portion of the proceeds from the annual competition support students participating in Appalachian’s Student Outdoor Learning Expeditions (SOLE), which are 21‐to 55 day educational adventures. Students participating in SOLE trips spend extended time exploring rugged and remote wilderness and become immersed in different cultures all while gaining academic credit.
